FLYERS: Cap Crunch

Kimmo Timonen will be the Flyers' highest paid defenseman next season

Since the NHL instituted the salary cap post-lockout, it has been a bit of a thorn in the Flyers’ side. I decided I’d take a look at the cap situation for the Flyers as they enter the 2010-2011 season (which, scary enough, is less than four months away). Frank Seravalli, of the Philadelphia Daily News reported that the NHL Salary Cap for the upcoming season is slated to go up $2 million, pushing the cap to a post-lockout high of $58.8 million. That would mean, according to Seravalli, that the Flyers would have about $8.82 million worth of wiggle room. Yikes.

According to CapGeek.com, here’s the Flyers current money allotment to their players for the upcoming season:

FORWARDS

Daniel Briere: $6.5 million

Mike Richards: $5.75 million

Simon Gagne: $5.25 million

Jeff Carter: $5 million

Scott Hartnell: $4.2 million

James van Riemsdyk: $1,654,167

Ian Laperriere: $1,166,167

Claude Giroux: $821,667

Ville Leino: $800,000

Blair Betts: $700,000

Riley Cote: $550,000

DEFENSEMEN

Kimmo Timonen: $6,333,333

Chris Pronger: $4,921,429

Matt Carle: $3,437,500

Oskars Bartulis: $600,000

GOALTENDERS

Brian Boucher: $925,000

Restricted Free Agents are as follows:

FORWARDS

Daniel Carcillo

Darroll Powe

David Laliberte

DEFENSEMEN

Braydon Coburn

Ryan Parent

And finally, the Unrestricted Free Agents:

FORWARDS

Arron Asham

Jared Ross

Mika Pyorala

DEFENSEMEN

Lukas Krajicek

Danny Syvret

GOALTENDERS

Ray Emery

Michael Leighton

….Many decisions await Flyers’ General Manager Paul Holmgren, who said on Friday that “Significant changes” await the Flyers this off-season. It will be interesting to see how this roster shapes up, and I’ll be sure to provide my insight on the situation and whatever may transpire all summer long.
