FLYERS: Orange and Black Stay Undefeated

Talk about getting your money’s worth.  The Flyers and Capitals made sure that all fans in attendance for the Flyers’ home opener got just that.  Aside from the up and down style played throughout the evening, the game was otherwise marred by sloppy play, and a career night for one, Matt Carle.  On to the Quick Hits.

Simon Gagne and Matt Carle celebrate with Kimmo Timonen after his second period goal

  • Mike Richards tallied a hat-trick and proved he can duel goal-for-goal – literally – with the greatest player on the planet in Alexander Ovechkin
  • Matt Carle had 4 assists on the game and leads all Flyers defensemen in points on the season.  Who would’ve thunk it?
  • Ray Emery looked somewhat human for the first time in Orange and Black. 32 saves on 37 shots isn’t bad, but it’ll only get tougher Thursday when the Penguins come to town.
  • The Flyers outshot the Caps 41-37, marking the third opponent the Flyers have outshot in as many tries
  • Mike Knuble: 16:45 time on ice. 4 shots. -1.  Sorry, Mike.
  • JVR and Blair Betts both left with injury.  Betts looked to be in severe pain when he left in the late stages of the game.
  • The Flyers were led in the TOI category yet again by…guess who! Chris Pronger with 27:44
  • Happy Birthday, Danny Briere.  #48 buzzed around the net all game, and finally won the contest in OT
  • The Flyers won the first of three important games this week.  Thursday and Saturday dates with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks remain
  • Great game by Kimmo Timonen tonight (1G, 2 A)
  • Nik Backstrom is a star who will never be realized under Ovechkin.  20+ mins, 3 assists, and he threw the body around quite a bit.
  • Flyers took 7 penalties, with 5 trips coming in the first period.  JOHN STEVENS HAVE YOUR BOYS READY TO PLAY DISCIPLINED HOCKEY
  • On a lighter note, how can you not love Joe Beninati’s call on Versus!?

Joe Beninati is def growing on me. Hate him when we get crushed in a game, but sounds like a homer when we’re winning. His tone is a part growl, part WWE wrestler, part rock star. And oh yea, part Mike Emerick.
