The National Hockey League has announced that on Monday, August 17, there will be an “Important Announcement” concerning the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The Classic, which will feature the Flyers and last season’s regular season Eastern Conference champion, the Boston Bruins, is slated for News Years Day of the upcoming calendar year. It’s presumed the announcement will be about the most talked-about topic since the announcement of The Classic, itself: the ticket situation. Early rumors from the Flyers side stated that Season Ticket Holders would have the first crack at tickets for the game, with seniority playing the role in order of selection. However, none of this has been confirmed.
The 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic is the third official Winter Classic, with the previous two being huge successes both financially and from a publicity stand-point for the National Hockey League. In the first game, a shoot-out goal by Sidney Crosby propelled the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Buffalo Sabres in front of 70,000 strong at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Western New York. Last year, the defending Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings had their way with divisional rival, the Chicago Blackhawks, defeating Chicago at the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field by a score of 6-4. Jiri Hudler led the way for the ‘Wings, with two goals and an assist. The third installment promises to be just as, if not more intriguing than the first two, as the Flyers and Bruins will re-kindle a rivalry that was – at one point – as heated a rivalry as there’s ever been in the NHL.
So, stay tuned tomorrow around noon for a major announcement for what has been assumed to be regarding ticket sales for the 2010 Winter Classic. In the mean time, feel free to check out the official website for the event, as well as get some merchandise. Even though this game will be taking place in Beantown, there’s no reason why Flyer fans can’t come out in numbers. Philly fans are notorious for traveling well when their teams hit the road, and its reasonable to expect the same case here.
